Oh yeah baby, get those literary engines revving, because Gabriela and I are starting a monthly book club! We are both huge readers and once this idea floated up to the surface of our never-ending idea bucket, it was a no-brainer.
Gabriela reads a ton of non-fiction - she loves memoirs, biographies, and anything educational. My vibe is generally fiction. I am a huge fan of fantasy and crime novels and I'll read anything with a bit of magic or mythology. We decided that we should combine these two interests into the most amazing book club of all time.
For our new book club, #RitualReads, we will be reading one non-fiction book per month that focuses on a metaphysical, esoteric, occult, or magical topic. The books wont be super long, and they'll be things that are somewhat on the cultural radar - but probably at the fringes. Our goal is to read more and expand our minds. We will also try to focus on female, POC, and LGBTQIA authors where possible!
At the beginning of each month we'll share the book we choose on Instagram so you can read along with us if you'd like! We will split the books into two halves and do two discussions -- one at the middle and one at the end of each month. We'll be sharing everything using the hashtag #RitualReads on Instagram (and you should too if you want to read along!).
Our June book will be From Here to Eternity: Traveling the World to Find the Good Death by Caitlin Doughty.
Doughty is a mortician, author, and YouTuber who is #DeathPositive. I've watched Caitlin's YouTube series, Ask A Mortician, throughout which she answers and explains the science and tradition behind the logistics and rituals of death. She discusses her experience with the mortuary arts in a way that really just generally makes me feel better about the whole dang death thing. Her book explores different cultural approaches to death, funerals, rites, and burials and we are just dying to read it! (I am so sorry I just had to.)
By creating this book club, we hope to nurture and develop a more sacred and meaningful reading ritual in our lives! Carving out time to widen our world-views is important to both of us, and we hope you'll join us on Instagram and read along!
